Stories From Our LEGO Town has joined the affiliate program for Educating Layton's Brick Ebooks. We were given a free copy of Brick Animals to review.
The kids are trying the projects in Brick Animals and we will share them with you as we go through them. You can find a complete list of the kid's Brick Animal projects here. For this post, Munchkin made a ladybug.
Munchkin loves ladybugs, so she was excited to see a ladybug among the other Brick Animals. She is only 4 years old, so she did have some help with her LEGO ladybug, but not much help :) Mostly she needed to borrow bricks from her brother and sister because she doesn't have as much LEGO as they do.
The worksheet with the ladybug project helped us turn this into a real science lesson too! In order to answer the questions, we had to go to Google to find the answers. Even Mom learned a lot from this! Last summer we had learned about the ladybug life cycle when we found a ladybug larva in my garden. We kept that larva, and another one that was found later, fed them tons of aphids, and watched them turn into adult ladybugs. It was really fascinating! Since we had studied the ladybug life cycle, Munchkin already knew that ladybugs lay eggs and do not give birth to live young. But we did not know that ladybugs don't have lungs! Ladybugs, and all insects, breath through trachea instead of lungs. Ladybugs also don't have a backbone! Instead, they have an exoskeleton. Those are some big works for little Munchkin, but it was a fun way to teach her those big words :)

Another great resource for learning about ladybugs can be found at Little Learning Lovies! They have a really cute Ladybug Life Cycle Colouring Book that you can find here. It is even on sale right now for only $2.00!
