Educating Laytons have blessed us with a free copy of their ebook, Brick Animals!
We are using it in our homeschool for part of our science program right now. In previous posts we have shared with you how the children copied the pictures from Brick Animals to make their animals just like Jake did in the ebook. This time when we looked at the ebook I encouraged them to be more creative and make the brick animals with their own unique twist.
Below is the picture from Brick Animals that Little Man chose this time. He wanted to make a giraffe because he loves African animals :)
You will notice that the creations in Brick Animals are two dimensional. This issue is addressed in Educating Laytons question and answer section.
Q. My children would rather make 3D “creations” than the 2D “creations” you offer. Why do you make them all flat?
A. We realized it was far easier for me to photograph as a 2D. We love that your children want to build 3D models and encourage everyone to add to each creation and truly make them their own.
When I encouraged my kids to try something different with their brick animals, Little Man decided to make his giraffe three dimensional. Here is his 3D giraffe.
Here are some interesting facts about giraffes that we have learned in our homeschool studies:
- Their feet are the size of dinner plates!
- When their babies are born, the mother gives birth standing up, which means the newborn giraffe drops about 5 feet to the ground when they are born!
- Lions are scared of giraffes! (Remember those big feet? Lions don't like getting kicked by them!)
